and learn more about the project HERE.
As part of MiTribe’s efforts to support local filmmakers, we are proud to offer our yearly Short Film Fund. Each year we offer a $2000 grant to a team of Vancouver filmmakers. We select one short film script a year, from any genre, to fund and co-produce in collaboration with the filmmakers. We support the filmmakers through the production process to complete a short film which is then THEIRS to distribute as they please. We only require 2 things from the end product:
- That MiTribe be credited in the film as a co-producer.
- That some material from the film (eg. trailer) is screened at MiTribe’s annual party in early November.
HOW TO SUBMIT
To submit your short film concept please email us, at email@example.com, a story-focused 300 – 500 word written pitch, and/or a 1 – 3 minute video pitch (private vimeo link is preferred) and/or a draft of the script (one of these things, or all three). We will review all short film submissions and will evaluate them based on
- The strength of their concept.
- Our belief in their ability to execute on an ultra-low budget.
After reviewing all short film submissions we will select 10 teams of filmmakers for a face-to-face interview with our panel. If a draft of the script has not yet been submitted, this draft will be due 2 days before the interview, along with resumes and demo reels (if applicable) from everyone on the filmmaker’s core creative team (including any cast already attached to the project). Discussion topics during the panel interviews will include production, story, timeline for shooting and distribution.
TERMS OF CO-PRODUCTION
WHAT WE WILL DO
We will fund the film project up to $2000. If production/post-production exceeds $2000 the filmmakers will be responsible for coming up with the remaining funds themselves.
We will fund the film with money upfront (not through reimbursement).
We will fund film costs as they come up (we will not pay filmmakers in a lump sum).
We will provide assistance as needed in the following areas; filling crew positions, locations, equipment, casting, catering, story/script editing, post-production services (including scoring) and film festival submissions.
WHAT WE WILL NOT DO
We will not direct the project. Any film submitted must either have a director already attached, or be open to having us help find a director.
We will not change the story or concept. Although we are happy to offer story and script EDITING suggestions if needed, we will not change the core concept of the script and any edits will be done in close collaboration with the creators. This is their project which MiTribe is happy to support.
After we have selected a short film script to fund and co-produce this year, a specific timeline agreement will be drawn up with the filmmakers. This timeline will vary depending on the needs of the film. The timeline will cover things such as dates for casting sessions, location scouting, shoot dates, post-production, release dates etc. Below is a general timeline that applies to all short film applicants.
